Yellowstone Academy Hosts Seventh Annual Fundraising Breakfast

Former Houston Rocket/Heisman Trophy Winner Charlie Ward Gives Keynote Address

Houston, TX, October 21, 2009 – Yellowstone Academy, Houston’s only private faith-based elementary school exclusively serving children living in extreme poverty, held its annual fundraising breakfast on Wednesday, October 7 at the Westin Galleria hotel. Charlie Ward, former Houston Rocket and Heisman Trophy winner, addressed an overflow crowd in the hotel ballroom, and the Yellowstone Academy Singers with Pastor Russell Thompson, City of Refuge Church, performed.

Among the numerous guests in attendance were new HISD Superintendent Terry Grier and his wife Nancy; Houston Mayoral candidate Gene Locke; Paula Harris, HISD Board Trustee representing the Third Ward; Houston philanthropist Jack S. Blanton and his wife Ginger; Yellowstone Founder, David Lumpkins; and Yellowstone Executive Director, Kim Hansen.

Established in 2002 and located in the heart of Houston’s Third Ward, Yellowstone currently serves 288 students in pre-K through 6th grade from families whose median annual income is approximately $8,000. The school seeks fundamental change by addressing root problems caused by illiteracy and dependency that plague families and children in poverty, reaching out to children at a time when studies show the most impact can be made. Yellowstone provides its students with a high-quality education, daily breakfast and lunch, uniforms, transportation, and after-school activities. The school relies solely on donations from individuals, corporations, congregations, and foundations to meet its operating budget.
