Our Students

 

Our StudentsYellowstone Academy is a faith-based, private school located in the heart of Houston’s Third Ward and serving the city’s neediest children. The school currently enrolls 288 students in grades PreK 3 through 6th. Since the school opened in August of 2002 with 64 three- and four-year old students, we have added a grade level each year.

For the 2009-2010 academic year:

  • 100% of our admissions are from low income families
  • 68% of our students are living in extreme poverty
  • 93% live in single parent homes
  • 99% are African American; 1% are Hispanic
  • Median annual income is $8,088

At Yellowstone Academy we believe:

  • All students can learn.
  • Each student is a valued individual with unique physical, social, emotional and intellectual needs.
  • A safe and physically comfortable environment promotes student learning.
  • The commitment to continuous improvement is imperative if our school is going to enable students to become confident, self-directed, lifelong learners.         
  • Students learn in different ways and should be provided with a variety of instructional approaches to support their learning. 
  • Students learn best when they are actively engaged in the learning process.                            
  • Challenging expectations increase individual student performance.                                            
  • Curriculum and instructional practices should incorporate a variety of learning activities to accommodate differences in learning styles.                                        
  • A student's self-esteem is enhanced by positive relationships and mutual respect among and between students and staff.
